Local musicians in partnership with the Zimbabwe Amalgamated Housing Association yesterday handed over US$25 000 and three tickets to Mollen Makoni following a fund-raising programme for her to undergo a kidney transplant in India. Mollen was scheduled to leave for India yesterday evening accompanied by her sister, Tendai, who will donate a kidney to her and her mother Locardia, who will act as the care-giver.

Musicians Suluman Chimbetu and Mathias Mhere were present at the function, representing other singers like Sabastian Magacha, Somandla Ndebele and gifted dancer Zoey Sifelani who were part of the fund-raising efforts.

The combined efforts between Zaha and the musicians resulted in a musical gala held in Masvingo a few weeks ago which helped raise part of the money, while Zimbabweans from various walks of life also donated various amounts.

The three tickets handed over to Mollen yesterday were purchased by Zaha director-general Killer Zivhu, who is also the chairperson for Chivi Rural District Council.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Zivhu thanked the musicians and Zimbabweans in general for heeding his call to bail out Mollen, who is a student at Great Zimbabwe University in Masvingo.

“I want to thank everyone who helped the cause, even those who contributed US$1 or R5,” he said.
“I also want to thank our musicians with the time they gave to the efforts by playing without being paid.

“Mollen is finally leaving for India and now I can sleep soundly knowing that I have helped someone to regain their life.
“We wish Mollen a quick recovery and all Zimbabweans will put you in our prayers so that you can come back fit.”

Mollen, who nearly shed tears of joy, thanked Zivhu and all those who donated money towards her kidney transplant, while Tendai said she was elated to donate the kidney to her sister in the knowlegde that she would save someone’s life.

Speaking at the same occasion, Mhere said raising US$25 000 was not an easy task, but it was important that people heeded the call to help Mollen.
“We want to thank God that our mission was fulfilled,” he said.

“God was on our side, helping us. It is not easy, but we hope that things will now work for her in India.”
Sulu thanked everyone who took part in fund-raising for Mollen.

The event came after Zivhu on Sunday donated two air tickets to India to Charles Munodzana, who will undergo heart surgery.
Munodzana left for India the same day the air tickets were donated.
