TAFARA MPOFU won the 2018 edition of Bata Open amateur golf championship at Gweru Golf Club at the weekend.

The Chapman amateur was in top form as he carded rounds of 78, 65, 78 and 74 off his zero handicap. Mpofu beat another Chapman-based player, Tafadzwa Nyamukondiwa, who finished as the runner-up.

The Gweru Golf Club proved to be a challenging course for most of the players and the high scores told the story. Mpofu won the tournament at seven over par.

Royal Harare’s Lewis Graeme was third, off his 24 handicap, with Leopard Rock’s Promise Sumbreiro in fourth place while Bradley Kulaisi completed the top five.

On the Sunshine Tour, in-form Ben Follet-Smith finished sixth in the Sun Wild Coast Sun Challenge at the Wild Coast Sun Country Club in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, on Sunday.

Follet-Smith and Marc Cayeux were the only local professionals to make the cut and the later finished tied in 15th place.

A former Wingate member, Follet-Smith had rounds of 67, 64 and 66 to finish tied with South Africa’s Oliver Bekker.

The tournament was won by Vaughn Groenewald who ended his three-year winless run.
