THE official Castle Lager Premier Soccer League broadcaster SuperSport have promised increased coverage of local matches for the remainder of the season. Speaking at the close of the two-day workshop for the broadcaster and the local teams, SuperSport boss Stanley Mathews said they will have an improved schedule before the league curtain comes down.

The event was attended by all the Premier League teams’ representative and Mathews promised they will resort to some double-headers in an effort to cover many games.

“We have been having some logistics problems and I think if we tally the fixtures with the FIFA calendar we will be able to have a better product.

“We have had problems to travel between Bulawayo and Harare but I think double-headers will be the way to go.

“We are also going to have the fixtures a few weeks before the games,” said Mathews.

SuperSport has been finding it difficult to cover at least two matches over the weekend as they may have to travel long distances.

“We managed to spend the days sharing ideas and we are happy with what current players have showcased.

“It is fantastic to see the bright development of PSL and improving the brand and the players the country is exporting means a lot.

“We have seen the growth and development of PSL and from our point of view there are fantastic players which point out that there is something positive going on here.

“Over the last years we had some developments as we have the first chairlady of a club which shows that there is development,” said Matthews.

He also praised log leaders Chicken Inn saying it was healthy for Zimbabwe football to have intense competition.

“We are happy with some of the quality of football all the 16 teams have shown as they were committed with everyone well represented; with passionate people.

“We have managed to ask each other how we can grow, improve and make our game interesting.

“We draw a lot of encouragement from the competition levels and our aim is to improve club brands and competition.

“And also our sponsorship package and the relationship with the media,” said Mathews.

Mathews took a swipe at hooliganism.

“It is very important that we condone violence at soccer matches, so is questionable officiating.

“I believe with that we can manage to draw sponsors as the corporate need to see positive steps when they put in their money.

“The need for a better product is important.

“The level of turnover at club level and there is need for long-term contracts for bodies which control soccer,” he said.
