She won an Oscar for playing Elizabeth II in the 2006 film “The Queen”. Now, Helen Mirren has once again scored a major award for playing her Royal Highness – this time for the play “The Audience” – at the 2015 Tony Awards in New York City on Sunday night. It also marked the 69-year-old’s first ever Tony Award win, which is considered to be US theatre’s highest honour.

Mirren beat out a tough field that included Carey Mulligan’s inner-city schoolteacher in “Skylight” and Elisabeth Moss in the feminist play “The Heidi Chronicles”.

“Your Majesty, you did it again,” Mirren said as she accepted her first Tony Award.

“Baby, this is for you and you know why,” Mirren said while pointing and looking out toward her husband Taylor Hackford.

“That’s nothing rude, incidentally,” she added with a laugh.

Mirren also portrayed Queen Elizabeth II in the 2006 British historical drama “The Queen” that earned her the Oscar for Best Actress.

She’s also won four Emmy Awards out of 11 nominations. Tony winners Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth co-hosted the show broadcast live on CBS from Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

The coveted Best Musical prize went to “Fun Home” in a field that included the popular “An American in Paris” that featured a score by George and Ira Gershwin.

“Fun Home” and its coming out story had a big night as it also won Best Book of a Musical, Best Score, Best Director of a Musical and Best Actor in a Musica

The musical was based on Alison Bechdel’s 2006 graphic memoir of the same name that focused on her relationship with her father and was the first Broadway musical with a lesbian protagonist. – Daily Mail
