PROMISING young Zimbabwean motocross rider Kuda Mhene (Jnr) was the star of the show during Sunday’s Bogwheelers Club’s national championship racing meeting at Donnybrook.

He “scored a double” by scooping two first-place finishes in the 65cc A and 85cc B classes.

Germany-bound Mhene (Jnr), a Grade Six pupil at St. George’s College’s Hartman House in Harare, first beat his traditional rivals Daiyaan Manuel and top female rider Tanya Muzinda in the 65cc A Class.

Mhene (Jnr) also claimed the first step on the podium when he won the 85cc B Class ahead of Declan Driscoll and Majaji Musariri to crown a memorable day for himself.

The 65cc A Class is where Mhene (Jnr) really shined.

He won all the three heats after decent starts and amassed 60 points. He was comfortable on his KTM bike and looks like a hard “man” to beat for the remainder of the season.

Daiyaan Manuel was the only rider to keep him in check, but second was the best he could do with 49 points after three heats.

The country’s top female rider, 10-year-old Muzinda also rode solidly to finish in third place with 43 points.

Reagan Evans (37 points) was fourth and Big “BJ” Chitima (28 points) came fifth overall.

As expected, the 50cc class was dominated by eight-year-old Emmanuel Bako who won all the three heats comfortably and proved he will be a big factor for the remainder of the season.

Travis da Silva finished second overall ahead of Jordan Dewdney while Lee Chigumba and Scott Hewer could only manage a fourth and a fifth.

Bako, who is in dominant form this season, also won the 65B Class ahead of Ryan Masimo and Ricky Whyte.

The 125cc Class was won by Regan Wasmuth who was just unstoppable at Donnybrook on Sunday.

Wasmuth (14) had his best ride of the season to keep out Brad Perry and Josh Gobey.

Wasmuth also emerged triumphant in the MX2 Class while his younger brother Ryan won the 50cc B Class.

There was also no stopping Cameron Thixton in the main MX1 Class which he won ahead of the Thomas brothers Josh, Shane and Broc. But it was good to see three members of the same family – Josh, Shane and Broc – all featuring in one class at the same race meeting.

Germany-bound Davin Cocker also had a great day on Sunday, winning the 85cc A Class ahead of Tristan Grainger and Reagan Bond.

Fourth and fifth places went to David Evans and Mark Webb.

In the Masters Class, the day belonged to former Zimbabwe’s champion rider Blaize Thomas who beat his brother Shane and John Mellor into second and third places.

Lofty Versfeld could only manage a fourth-place finish.

Sunday also saw kids under the age of seven taking part in the PeeWee Class with the top honours going to Joshua Halkier.

Munyaradzi Bako also did well to finish in second place ahead of Brodie Jarvis.
