THE qualification race for the biannual Eisenhower Trophy resumes with one of the qualifying events — the MAWEGU Championships — set to tee off at Kadoma and Chegutu Country Clubs tomorrow morning.
The Zimbabwe Golf Association announced that the event will go ahead tomorrow and depending with the turnout, they are likely to use two courses but if there is a low turnout then Kadoma will host the event.

Several top amateurs such as Jack Allard, Travis Smith and Kieran Vincent, fresh from the Zimbabwe Open and the Zone VI in South Africa where they finished second last week, are expected to take part. Five events including Mawegu Open formerly Mashonaland East West Championships, will be considered for the points in the race for the 29th edition of the prestigious tournament.

The 2014 edition of the Eisenhower Trophy will be staged in Japan in September. Japan’s city of Karuizawa, in Nagano Prefecture, was selected by the International Golf Federation as the site for this year’s World Amateur Team Championships. The Prince Hotel Resort’s Iriyama and Oshitate courses will be used for the championships.

Zimbabwe were in 2010 represented by Scott Vincent, Nyasha Muyambo and Roger Jack in the event in Argentina while Vincent, Ray Badernhoist and Barry Painting went for the 2012 edition in Turkey. Players like Clive Nguru are likely to also feature prominently in the event and he will have to battle it out with the ever-improving Stuart Krog.

The other players to look forward to will be national team captain Christian Mbanga, Garry Thompson and former cricketer Graeme Creamer.
