A Mutare man is battling for life at Mutare Provincial Hospital after he was found at a dumpsite with his stomach cut open.

Police have since launched a manhunt for his unknown assailant.

Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa confirmed the incident which occurred at around 6pm on Wednesday at Mutare City Council dump site along Beira Road.

He said a passer-by found the man with a deep gash on his stomach, with intestines hanging out.

The good Samaritan took the man to Mutare Provincial Hospital for treatment and made a report at the police station at the hospital.

Insp Kakohwa said police were looking for information that could assist in identifying the assailant and urged members of the public who were missing a male relative between 30 and 35 years to visit Mutare Provincial Hospital.

Meanwhile, police in Mutare are looking for two armed robbers who forced their way into a house in the city and stole US$20, ZW$60, bank cards and a black handbag.

Insp Kakohwa said the incident occurred on July 24 at house number 130 Second Street Mutare.

He said Kith Holland (65) and his wife Bridget arrived home at around 8pm to discover one of the thieves in their bedroom holding a pistol.

The robber ordered Bridget to lie down and surrender all the valuables and conducted a search of the house before taking her handbag which contained the money and bank cards.

Her husband fought with the second robber, who upon realising that he had been overpowered, fired a shot in the air before the duo ran away.

The case was reported at Mutare Central Police and investigations are still in progress.
