Makaza for Harare cross country meet

SEASONED long-distance runner Collen Makaza says he is taking advantage of the Harare Athletics Board Cross Country Selection meet slated for tomorrow at Morris Depot to step up his preparations for the Two Oceans Ultra marathon. Tomorrow’s competition will see cadets (Under-14s) boys and girls compete in the 2km event while youth and junior girls fight for honours in the 4km and 6km respectively.

The junior men and senior women will have the opportunity to check their fitness levels in the 8km race and the competition concludes with a 10km race for men.

“I am going to compete because I am preparing for the Two Oceans in April. So this is for my speed work, it’s going to be 56km in South Africa and I need to work on my speed. “Last year I came second behind veteran Mike Fokorani and I am looking forward to this year’s race,” said Makaza.

The experienced long-distance runner was recently elected coaches coordinator for HAB and he urged participants to give their all during the competition as they are selecting a team for the National Championships next month in Bulawayo.

“It’s our selection event. We want to select our team to represent Harare in Bulawayo at the National Cross-Country. So we are looking at having those veteran athletes such as Olivia Chitate, Constance Nyasango, Cephas Pasipamire and Kelvin Pangiso,” said Makaza.
