THE Lions Club International plans to construct a US$100 000 maternal health clinic in Vumba, about 25km south east of Mutare, Manicaland province, that will cater for patients from Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

The Vumba area was hit hard by Cyclone Idai in 2019, which left a trail of destruction in the eastern parts of the country.

Pregnant women in the area have been walking long distances to seek maternal care.

Vinay Naicker, the 412 A District governor from Botswana, told New Ziana that the construction of the maternal clinic, whose ground breaking ceremony is pencilled for September 24 this year, was one of their major projects in Zimbabwe.

“Here in Zimbabwe, we are serving the disadvantaged and needy people. We have built schools, clinics and in terms of serving, we keep going on and on,” he said.

“We are going to receive a US$75 000 grant from Lions Club International and we intend to add US$25 000 from our District 412 Lions Club members to make a total of US $100 000, which we intend to use to construct a maternal clinic in Vumba. 

“According to our research, Vumba needs a maternal clinic as pregnant women walk long distances to access maternal services. The clinic will also cater for people in Mozambique who will cross the border to get maternal care services.”

Naicker, who said they expected to complete the project in six months, urged Zimbabweans to join the Lions Club, one of the largest organisations in the world with about 1.4 million members in over 200 countries.
