Legislators pay condolences to Kenya

Parliamentarians from across the political divide yesterday paid their condolences to the government of Kenya and its people following the death of 69 people after a four-day siege at a shopping mall by militants last month. The upmarket Westgate Shopping Mall was attacked by suspected Somali Islamist militants from Al Shabaab.
The motion was moved by MDC-T’s Mr Gordon Moyo (Makokoba).

“May I implore this House to convey a message of condolence to the innocent lives, to the innocent women and children in Kenya.
“People were massacred and brutalised in cowardly fashion and this house should convey a message of condolence to the families of the deceased,” he said.

Zanu-PF MP for Makoni South, Cde Mandi Chimene, echoed similar sentiments but implored the nation to equally remember the lives of gallant sons and daughters of Zimbabwe that were also brutalised in similar fashion by the Ian Smith regime.

“What happened in Kenya brings sad memories to some of us who took part in the liberation struggle. The way those people died in Kenya especially the innocent children and women brings memories of the massacres at Chimoio, Nyadzonia and Freedom Camp,” she said.

Cde Chimene called on Zimbabwe’s security forces to remain vigilant to prevent such occurrences in Zimbabwe.
Mberengwa South MP Cde Chiratidzo Mabuwa, took a swipe at US President Barak Obama for his response on the Kenya tragedy despite having his roots there.

“What the US President has done in the aftermath of the Kenyan tragedy is unAfrican. We expected that as a person whose origins are from Kenya, he should have visited the country to pay his respects,” she said.
