PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe today left Harare for Windhoek, Namibia to attend president-elect, Dr Hage Geingob’s inauguration ceremony and the country’s silver jubilee independence celebrations.

The Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting services said Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko will be the acting President.

Dr Geingob (73) is set to be sworn in tomorrow as Namibia’s third president after a landslide victory in Parliamentary and Presidential elections held in November last year.

He received an emphatic 86.7 percent electoral mandate in the 2014 presidential election.

Dr Geingob defeated nine other presidential candidates, while his party, Swapo, trounced 15 other political parties in the parliamentary poll to win 77 seats in the 96-member National Assembly, with opposition parties scrambling for the remaining 19 seats.

Veterans’ Affairs Minister Nicky Iyambo was appointed as the country’s new vice president, a newly-created position.

Foreign Affairs Minister Netumbo Ndaitwah has also been appointed as the new deputy prime minister of the South-west African country.

Dr Geingob said the new appointments would be endorsed by parliament after which the new appointees would be sworn into their new positions.
