Beneficiaries of the land reform programme could soon pay rent to Government as a means of encouraging people to use their farms productively.
This will also raise money for land audits and related activities. In an interview last week, Lands and Rural Resettlement Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora also said Government had started surveying 6 000 farms to demarcate final boundaries to stem disputes. “We are working on introducing a land rental so that our people do not use land for free,” said Dr Mombeshora.

“The rental will enable our ministry to finance inspection and surveying of farms; that is work in progress,” Dr Mombeshora said.
“The challenge is that we require funds from the fiscus to continue with the surveying, so I cannot give a date when the exercise will end because it is tied to availability of funds that is why we want to introduce a land rental, which is one way of raising funds.”
