Having been raised in an entrepreneurial family, Gladys Chibanda has gone on to implement her experience and knowledge by starting her own business.

In her quest to challenge the status quo, Chibanda formed Krafted Ink which has made a mark on the crafts industry.

Her company was conceived out of a strong desire to uphold the spirit of Ubuntu by sharing gifts and memories.

Its design philosophy is of traditional craftsmanship and Afro-contemporary style which enables the creation of timeless memories and experiences.

“I started my journey at the age of 21. I desired to uphold the African ideals of sharing presents and l have been crafting memories ever since,” said Chibanda.

“The handmade products include journals, diaries, gift bags, and gift boxes using African print fabric.”

“Krafted Ink is an innovative art and craft-oriented enterprise, specialising in African textile journals and gift packaging, l have mastered the art of combining colours in making gift packaging to ensure lasting impressions in the lives of people,” she said.

Well known for her bespoke, eco-friendly, handmade Ankara notebooks and gift sets, Chibanda said she is a young award-winning creative entrepreneur who has managed to make a living out of her love for art.

“Krafted Ink ensures people celebrate momentous occasions with the appropriate gifts. Whether it is a wedding, the birth of a child, a new home, or a birthday, we have something to suit every need. Krafted Ink has since expanded to product packaging and has launched a fashion line,” she said.

“Besides my family, there have been several individuals who have played pivotal roles in inspiring and shaping my journey. One notable source of inspiration has been my mentors and advisors throughout my career. These individuals, with their wealth of experience and insights, have provided invaluable guidance and encouragement, empowering me to navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship with confidence.”

“Additionally, I draw inspiration from the trailblazers and thought leaders within my industry. Observing their accomplishments and learning from their experiences has been instrumental in fuelling my ambition and driving me to push the boundaries of what’s possible,” she explains.

Chibanda has also founded Tisu Digital Craftsmen, an agency that specialises in brand identity and digital marketing.

In 2021 she was won the Business Growth Award from the Youth Conneckt programme run by UNDP.

Chibanda has also won the Tony Elumelu Foundation class of 201 and has been listed in the Gumiguru 50 under 30 Young Leaders class of 2021.

She has served as an executive board member of Zimbabwe Applied and Crafts Association.

She was featured as Entrepreneur of the Month by Fashionomics Africa in Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria’s TEF Circle which is the Tony Elumelu Foundation’s monthly digest that combines trends, news, and the stories of innovation and creativity from start-ups across the continent.

“I enjoy youth leadership and empowerment, l have shared some of my opinions on empowerment issues at UNICEF and the Swedish Embassy in Zimbabwe. Recently I was awarded the top entrepreneur in Zimbabwe at the Macydo Lead 30 under 30 awards,” she said.

“To all the young girls out there, believe in yourselves and never underestimate your worth. You are capable of achieving anything you set your mind to. Embrace your uniqueness, your strengths, and your passions.

“Don’t be afraid to dream big and pursue your goals with determination and resilience,”.

She noted that her commitment to empowering girls and young women is deeply rooted in her personal and professional journey. While her primary focus may not be on direct training programmes, she is passionate about creating opportunities and advocating for initiatives that support the education, development, and empowerment of girls.

“I intend to explore ways to further contribute to the empowerment of girls, whether through mentorship programmes, educational initiatives, or other avenues. My ultimate goal is to help create a world where every girl has the opportunity to fulfil her potential and pursue her dreams, regardless of her background or circumstances,”.

Indeed, Chibanda is a true example of the importance of girls being empowered to stand their ground and pursue their passions. — [email protected]
