Chivi South legislator Cde Killer Zivhu yesterday bought food for 200 street kids in Harare and urged residents to take care of the underprivileged.

While eating the food with the streets kids, Cde Zivhu went down memory lane, narrating his first day on the streets of Harare and how street kids helped him out and treated him like their  brother.

“August 6 is an important day in my life because I arrived in Harare for the first time on that day in 1995 and I didn’t know how to get to my relatives. As you know, it’s not everyone who had a cellphone,” he said.

“I had to stay on the streets for four days and I was helped by street kids. They are the ones who showed me the police station and the streets of Harare. Because of them I was able to meet my relatives.”

Cde Zivhu urged residents to help children living on the streets and give them a decent meal whenever they could.

He said it was everyone’s responsibility to protect the street kids.

“Let us all work together to protect and feed the children or even help them by any other means we can,” said Cde Zivhu. “Some people neglect them and choose to throw food in the bins than giving it to them.

“Every person is important in someone’s life no matter where you meet them. The circumstances which drive people onto the streets are different.”

One of the beneficiaries, who identified herself as Florence, said this is one of her best days in Harare.

“I wasn’t expecting this today, I’m very happy,” she said. “Most people do not want to see us anywhere near them. They look at us as if we are not human.”

Another kid said they rarely had a good meal and thanked Cde Zivhu for making his day.

“It’s like Christmas to me and my fellow street kids,” he said. “We rarely eat this kind of food, we rely only on leftovers and breadcrumbs, if we come across them, but today, this kind-hearted man just spoiled us.

“We also wish to have a decent meal on a daily basis, but we cannot afford it. All I can say is thank you Mr Zivhu for recognising us and making this day a special one for me and my friends.”
