HARARE City Council must dismiss directors who earn hefty salaries while not delivering service instead of targeting low wage earners, Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Cde Saviour Kasukuwere has said.

Speaking during a ground- breaking ceremony for the Homelink Housing Project in Tynwald last week, Minister Kasukuwere said he would approve dismissal of employees either absconding from work or facing disciplinary problems.

“Those who have not been working must go and those who are causing problems, yes, I will accept. Bring the list to me and I will accept. We will agree that those who are not working leave council service. You at the top, I am also watching you. You do not start by firing the poor. I want you at the top. You are the ones who are not working,” said Minister Kasukuwere.

“I will tell Mrs Ncube (Acting Town Clerk Mrs Josephine Ncube) to write a letter dismissing those who are not working and I will quickly approve.

“We have guys earning over $20 000. Why do you dismiss 50 people earning $400 while you the bosses who are earning a lot are sitting in your offices?”

Minister Kasukuwere said it was time for the bosses to prove their worth.

“So you bosses shape up or ship out. I want the quarry to start working. I want to see you repairing the roads,” he said.

Minister Kasukuwere said he wanted to see order in the housing sector.

“We have been discussing how we can proceed in a situation where the land barons are now leading and Government and town authorities are lagging behind. Land barons have made a fortune while we were watching. We are saying no more to this chaos.

“This minister and Government will not allow chaos to continue. We have a situation where genuine citizens are being robbed in broad day-light,” he said.

“You just do not wake up in the morning with a heap of pegs in your pocket and you start hitting the ground pegging land and giving it away. Those who survived through unscrupulous behaviour, we are saying stop it and you know what I mean when I say stop it.”

Minister Kasukuwere said those sitting on State land for speculative purposes risked losing it.

“I want to see who has land, not because we want to victimise those with the land, but if you have State land and you are not using it, you are sitting on it for speculation purposes, that land is withdrawn immediately.”
