The Karoi Town Council has launched a promotion aimed at lessening the burden of debt on its ratepayers, an official has said.

The initiative called Dollar-for-Dollar Promotion started on June 1 this year and is expected to end on June 30.

In an interview, council spokesperson Mr Precious Nharara said the local authority introduced the initiative as a measure to promote the culture of rate paying and improving revenue inflow.

“The promotion is an initiative in line with council’s thrust to lessen the burden of debt on residents and ratepayers while at the same time enhancing revenue,” he said.

Mr Nharara urged the ratepayers to take up the initiative to clear their bills.

“We urge residents and ratepayers to take full advantage of the opportunity and clear their bills,” he said.

“We, however, wish to underscore that the promotion period has a timeline.”

Mr Nharara said after the June 30 deadline, council will introduce other programmes to encourage debt clearances.

Under the Dollar-for-Dollar Promotion, council deducts the same amount of money one pays.

The council has also indicated that all paid-up ratepayers would get a three months’ waiver on rates. The Karoi Town Council is owed almost $1 million in rates and tariffs.
