THE Zimbabwe Republic Police should exhibit the highest standard of discipline and integrity in the discharge of its duties in line with the expectations of the new dispensation, Deputy Commissioner General, Administration Learner Ncube has said.

He was speaking after a tour of some projects being undertaken at Support Unit headquarters at Chikurubi in Harare.

“Operationally, the Support Unit is the paramilitary wing of the organisation whose mandate is to support other departments whenever the need arises. It is an important player in the maintenance of peace and tranquillity in the country,” he said.

“The conduct, performance and appearance of a member of the unit must therefore be of the highest standard since the community looks upon you as custodians of organisation standards. Any member, who aspires to put on the eagle emblem, must be of impeccable character.

“I therefore implore you to be encourage your subordinates to remain dedicated to the unit and to exhibit the highest standard of discipline and integrity so that your character and actions mirror the new brand that the organisation envisages.”

He also received a donation of Sub Aqua diving equipment and kits worth US$40 000 from Action Aid Zimbabwe. The donation was handed over by Action Aid Zimbabwe representative head of Programmes and Fundraising, Mr Itai Andrew Chikowore. The diving equipment and the kits will be donated to floods prone stations such as Kariba, Mbire and Binga.

Deputy Commissioner General Ncube said that the Sub Aqua Unit is an important section in the ZRP organisation that deals with underwater operations.
He said its main duties and responsibilities are to give support to criminal investigations which include recovery of bodies, and exhibits from various water bodies across the country.

It also performs rescue operations of marooned people during floods. The tour was his maiden visit to the unit as the Deputy Commissioner General Administration.  He was also assessing the projects being undertaken by the unit to sustain their operations.

To this end, he said the purpose of the visit is to look back, reflect on the achievement, and to see what still needs to be done.

“Thus, I wish to express my pleasure for the nobility of this occasion. It is an assemblage of people whose sights are set towards strengthening the capacity and operational efficacy of police, a feat which results in superior service delivery to the populace.

“Though, the organisation is currently not receiving enough funding from the fiscus, I am pleased to note that Support Unit has continued to pursue viable projects in order to support its operations. I have noted with appreciation the various activities that you have undertaken within a short period of time,” he said.

The Support Unit has drilled boreholes at Chikurubi to facilitate the provision of clean water to residents and improved street lighting system in camp to enhance security.
