new album, “Charewa PaCharewa” early this year.
In an interview, Joe said the release of their album in February has not only put the group back into the limelight but also restored confidence among their fans, some of whom had grown impatient.
“Our new album is doing us a lot of proud. It has indeed received much support from our fans judging from the overwhelming response during live shows and the sales made so far.
“This is our second album after Mukoma (Sibanda)’s departure. The first one is ‘Ndaizivei’ which I jointly did with Jevas Mhasvi who is now with the Air Force Band.
“We recorded our new album at Metro Studio following the expiry of our three-year contract with Gramma Records last year,” he said.
“Charewa paCharewa” has six tracks – “Betty”, “Vadzimba”, “Hazel”, “Dr Issa”, “Saiwe” and “Coin”.
It is the humour-packed, “Coin” that has become quite popular with fans especially during live shows.
The track is about two passengers travelling to Karoi. Unfortunately, the pair – a man and a woman – is given a dollar note to split between them. Drama unfolds when the two fail to get change and decide to buy a plate of sadza and chicken at a food outlet.
While they share the plate of sadza the woman (Mai Pershy) receives a call from her husband (Baba Pershy) asking how far she had gone with the journey to Karoi.
Unfortunately, the woman thinks her husband is not nearby and lies to him that she was near Lions’ Den. The man turns violent and attacks her male counterpart before he orders the two to go away as husband and wife.
The new couple settles in the rural areas but the former husband periodically travels there on the pretext of seeing his child.
The two resuscitate their relationship and meet often during the absence of the new husband.
One day the suspicious husband embarks on a “fake” trip to Harare and this presents a free opportunity for Baba Pershy to enjoy freely with Mai Pershy.
In the middle of their drinking binge, the new husband storms into the bedroom only to find the couple half naked with Baba Pershy stone drunk.
The new husband takes advantage and forces Baba Pershy to sit on a hot stove.
As he storms out of the bedroom, Baba Pershy flees the scene forgetting the company car that he had parked outside.
Unfortunately the car burns in a mysterious fire putting Baba Pershy into further trouble.
“Betty” talks about a looming divorce between a husband and wife (Betty) ostensibly due to failure by the wife to perform her roles.
“Vadzimba” talks about toiling that sometimes never rewards despite investing much effort into it.
It, however, puts prayer to God as the source of comfort.
The track, “Hazel” talks about a woman who is particular about financial affluence.
Hazel runs away from her matrimonial home after the husband loses his job. In her search for greener pastures she co-habits with different men but to no avail.
In “Dr Isaa”, an ailing person confesses that they have lived a life riddled with unchastity hence the possibility of being infected with HIV.
“Dr Issa” is thus requested to come and take some blood sample so he can diagnose the ailment.
“Saiwe” talks about a successful wedding that should be complimented by a happy life for the couple. The wife is encouraged to respect her hubby so as to gain support from her in-laws.
Asked whether the incarceration of the group’s drummer – Paradzai Mandimu – early this year did not disturb the group’s operation, Joe said: “Although there were some inevitable hiccups they did not last long as we already had a drummer on internship alongside Mandimu. We usually visit him at Chikurubi Maximum Prison with food and cigarettes,” he said.
Mandimu was jailed 12 years for rape in February this year.
