One person died and another one was seriously injured when a haulage truck and a 3-tonne truck collided head-on at the 64 km peg along the Harare-Mutare highway this evening.

The haulage truck driver sustained injuries and was rushed to Marondera Hospital for assistance, while the body of the deceased was ferried to the same hospital mortuary.

Police spokesperson for Mashonaland East province, Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi confirmed the accident.

“The now deceased was driving a 3-tonne truck towards Harare and on reaching the 64 km peg, he encroached in the lane of oncoming traffic resulting in a head-on collision with a haulage truck which was heading to Mutare.

“The driver of the 3-tonne truck died on the spot after sustaining multiple injuries . The haulage truck driver sustained some injuries and was referred to Marondera Hospital for treatment and his condition is said to be stable.

“We urge drivers to be cautious when on the road.”
