City of Harare’s longest serving secretary Mrs Diana Chideya has died. She died yesterday at the age of 54. In a statement yesterday, Harare Mayor councillor Bernard Manyenyeni expressed shock at the secretary’s untimely death. “The mayor, city councillors, management and staff are saddened by the untimely death of Mrs Diana Chideya nee Mpatila who joined the angels on July 27, 2016.

“Mrs Chideya was a pillar of strength to many at Town House. “She was an oasis of knowledge, an ever ready counsellor, a mother and encouragement to many,” read the statement.

Mrs Chideya joined council in 1988 as secretary to the then deputy town clerk. She was promoted to the Mayor’s Office in 1996, a position she held until her death. She served seven mayors since 1996 and “did so with agility, diligence, uprightness and humility”.

Before her council tenure, she worked for Government in various capacities within the secretarial portfolios. She is survived by her husband Nhamo William Chideya, four children, two daughters-in-law and several grandchildren.

Mourners are gathered at House Number: 6017, 152 Circle Kuwadzana 5. Burial is slated for Friday at Warren Hills Cemetery in the afternoon.
