Harare Deputy Mayor Councillor Thomas Muzuva has died. He was 43. Councillor Muzuva succumbed to cancer of the colon at West End Hospital yesterday. He served at Town House as a councillor for seven years in Kambuzuma, Westwood and Marimba.

Harare Mayor Councillor Bernard Manyenyeni said Clr Muzuva’s contributions towards service delivery were going to be missed.

“I can confirm that we have lost the deputy mayor councillor Thomas Musarurwa Muzuva today,” he said. “Councillor Muzuva succumbed to cancer, but he fought a brave and admiral fight.

“The deputy mayor was exceptionally well informed and intimate with council operations. He was serving his second term in council having used his first term as a councillor to enrich his understanding of this vast institution.”

Clr Muzuva’s brother, Ambitious, said he was saddened that the family had lost a pillar of strength.

“It pains us as members of the family of the deceased,” he said. “He was my brother and my best friend who contributed immensely to the family’s progress and unity.”

Fellow councillor and Human Resources and General Purposes Committee chairperson CIr Wellington Chikombo said Clr Muzuva was a friend, teacher, mentor and “a granary of wisdom”.

“We as councillors are in a state of shock as we mourn the passing on of CIr Muzuva,” he said.

“That light that shone in Thomas is too powerful to be diminished by death. He was a doer not a spectator. I have met many famous and successful people whom the world would call great, but I never met a greater man than him.”

Clr Muzuva joined Harare City Council in 2008 on an MDC-T ticket and rose to become the deputy mayor for the city in 2013.

He is expected to be buried at his rural home in Hwedza at a date to be announced.

CIr Muzuva was born on October 17, 1972.

Mourners are gathered at No 9165 Kambuzuma 5 Extension.

He is survived by his wife Wendy and four children.
