A SECOND half brace by Martin Vengesai was enough to give Harare City maximum points away from home yesterday as they continued with their resurgence with a victory over struggling Triangle at Gibbo. Vengesai scored either side of Richard Kawondera’s goal to leave Triangle deep in the relegation puzzle, with six games remaining in the season. The defeat, which was their 11th this year, piled more pressure on under-fire coach Biggie Zuze who is currently sitting on an ultimatum following a string of poor results.

Triangle lost their last match to Buffaloes by the same margin and assistant coach Lovemore Dzoro said their defence was letting down the team as he criticised his players for giving in easily to their opponents and conceding silly goals.

“We are conceding silly goals and I think we need to change our rearguard because we made the same mistakes and got punished at Buffaloes. Instead of learning from our mistakes we repeated the same thing today.

“I think the boys are tired at this point of season and a pair of new legs is needed and we also need to tighten our screws and fight to the end,” said Dzoro.
Triangle were more determined early in the game and could have taken the lead in the 19th minute but Graham Ncube headed his effort down and the ball bounced over the bar from only three yards from goal. Harare City had their chance in the 39th minute when man of the match Osborne Mukuradare unleashed a thunderbolt from about 25yards but Ronald Mudimu was up to the task to tip the ball over the bar for a corner kick.

The Sunshine Boys missed another glorious opportunity in the first minute of the second half when Vengesai drove his effort over the bar after connecting with Mukuradare’s well weighed in cross.

Courage Denias, who returned after a long lay-off with a muscle injury looked in disbelief as he failed to direct his header into the nets after a perfect interplay involving Tatenda Tsuro and Charles Rukwanhi three minutes later.

Triangle were made to pay for their missed chances in the 51st minute when Mukuradare crossed the ball to Vengesai who coolly finished from close range.
Substitute Kawondera, who replaced Ncube, set up Hilary Bakacheza who unleashed a ferocious shot only to be denied by Maxwell Nyamupangedengu who had a good game.
Kawondera then took matters into his own hands, heading home a perfect Nhamo Lameck cross to beat Nyamupangedengu from close range and level the scores at 1-1.

Triangle captain William Mapfumo was at his usual best taking care of big forward Francisco Zekumbawire who had rather a quiet afternoon.
Triangle however would feel let down by their defender Jimmy Tigere who gifted Harare City a goal that earned them maximum set of points.

Tigere flicked the high ball which looked harmless into the path of Vengesai who brilliantly chipped over the advancing goalkeeper Ronald Mudimu in the 89th minute, to score his second of the game.

Zuze was not a happy man with the result as he thought a draw could have been a fairer result. The Triangle coach though was still confident of survival despite remaining just a place above the drop zone with 27 points.

“We created chances and were on top of the situation but we could not convert our chances. We need people who can score goals and the only way forward is to regroup and keep our focus on the remaining games,” said Zuze.

His opposite number Masimba Dinyero was over the moon and said it was a sweet victory on the road against struggling Lowveld side.
Triangle chairman Lovemore Matikinyidze was clearly unhappy with the result but was he was not in a position to comment about Zuze’s future.

Matikinyidze has already fired goalkeeper’s coach Gift Muzadzi after the former Warriros goalkeeper refused to append his signature on an amended contract that would factor in the executve’s ultimatum.
