Harare City Council has for the first time in 15 years presented its audited statements on time with Mayor Bernard Manyenyeni challenging management to be proactive. The mayor described as a milestone the presentation of audit reports for 2013, 2014 and 2015 financial years. “This is a great milestone for Harare City Council with indications that the reporting position which we have attained today has not been achieved in over 15 years,” said Mayor Manyenyeni. The Herald could not glean into the audited results as they are still to be made public.

“Harare City Council is public unlimited, our facts and figures belong to the residents and ratepayers of this city. Our duty at Town House is to try and do exactly what each resident of this city would do if they were available to do the work themselves.”

He said City of Harare was bigger than individuals and there was no room for tardy performance. “In celebration of this (previously)elusive milestone, I call upon council management to exhibit more energy and pace. We need a new life, new zeal and a better image of performance,” he said.

Meanwhile, Harare City Council scooped a prize in the water and reticulation category at the Chartered Institute of Project Managers in Zimbabwe in recognition of the successful implementation of Morton Jaffray Water Treatment Works upgrade.

Council was assisted by China Machinery and Engineering Corporation in the implementation of the $144 million project funded by a loan from China Exim Bank. Harare also emerged the first runner-up in the Alternative Energy Solutions for its involvement in the construction of a biogas plant in Mbare in partnership with local company Synlak (Private) Limited.

The project, spearheaded by the City of Harare’s engineer Calvin Chigariro and Synlak managing director Mr Moses Mpofu, is expected to produce electricity on completion.
