Gvt sources US$25m for voter education, registration

exercise is expected to begin next week with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission saying it was ready to conduct the exercise.

“Treasury has secured the sum of US$25 million in the consolidated revenue fund. This will be channeled towards the intense voter registration exercise that is defined in part six of the new Zimbabwe constitution,” Minister Biti told a press conference on the state of the economy this afternoon.

“We spent the whole morning in Cabinet and Government is going to publish the consolidated plan for how this voter registration exercise is going to pan out. I can tell you that what has been agreed is that there will be a mobile voter registration unit in every ward of Zimbabwe’s 1900 wards. We also agreed that schools will have the 2008 voters roll so that persons can inspect the voters’ roll.”

Zec deputy chairperson Mrs Joice Kazembe confirmed the development yesterday in an interview on the sidelines of a workshop on voter education with faith based organisations.

“We have got the funding and we will be beginning next week. We will have teams in all the 1 958 Wards in the country but more details would be made public by the chairperson (Justice Rita Makarau),” Mrs Kazembe said.

Minister Biti said Government was now seized with securing about US$130 million required for the harmonized elections.
He said uncertainty over when elections were going to be held was negatively affecting performance of the economy.

He said businesses had adopted a wait and see attitude while urging principals in the inclusive Government to proclaim the election date.
