Govt puts system to monitor clean-up campaigns Statutory Instrument 54 of 2024 cited as Control of Goods (Import and Export) (Commerce) (Amendment) Regulations, 2024 (No. 10) gazetted by Industry and Commerce Minister Mangaliso Ndlovu yesterday, deletes the old 2021 need for an import licence for older cars and replaces it with a pure ban plus a re-export requirement.

The Government has developed a system for monitoring the participation of all institutions in national clean-up campaigns to ensure communities attain high standards of cleanliness, a Cabinet minister has said.

Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Mangaliso Ndlovu said this during the first 2022 national clean -up campaign held in Kwekwe last Friday.

“We, however, note that there is some laxity to participate in this noble cause by some sectors of the society which include some local authorities, the business sector and other Government departments,” he said.

“We assure you Your Excellency that your vision of achieving cleanliness of the communities will continue to be re-energised time and again and starting from February 2022, we will have a system to account for all participating and non-participating institutions,” he said.

Minister Ndlovu said his ministry had trained 50 municipal police officers and rangers from Kwekwe, Redcliff and Zibagwe Rural District Council with the aim of creating Environmental Inspectorate Units in each of the local authorities.

“There is realisation that law enforcement is crucial in sustaining a clean, safe and healthy environment. This is a feature that the ministry will want to cascade to other local authorities.

“At national level, we have already established the National Environmental Law Enforcement Police Unit working together with the Zimbabwe Republic Police.

President Mnangagwa has been leading from the front since the inception of the national clean-up campaigns on December 5, 2018.

The campaigns, themed “Zero tolerance to litter; My environment my pride”, are held between 8am and 10am on the first Friday of every month. — New Ziana.
