Local authorities in rural settings must be given resources to ensure that they reach all parts of their communities, Seke legislator Cde Phineas Chihota has said.

Addressing Seke residents at a handover ceremony of basic commodities to orphans and vulnerable children courtesy of Get Bucks, Cde Chihota said it was important for non-urban local authorities to get adequate resources to support vulnerable people in their communities.

“It is unfortunate to note that we have so many orphans who are living in dire conditions and yet local councillors might not even be aware of such cases.

“It is important for them to have adequate resources, which is why we are planning the necessary logistics which will likely see all the 21 councillors we have in Seke receiving their own individual cars which should improve their mobility in the community,” said Cde Chihota.

“It is commendable to note that organisations such as Get Bucks take it upon themselves to ensure that they at least do something for vulnerable children because everyone has an obligation to people who are less advantaged.”

The director of the Seke Rural Home-based care facility, Mrs Veronica Ngwerume, said Seke had more than 3 500 orphans some of whom could not fend for themselves.

“We are grateful for the assistance rendered to some of the vulnerable orphans we have in Seke. We, however, have an even greater number of vulnerable children who are affected and infected by the HIV virus,” said Mrs Ngwerume.

“Some of these children are sick, yet they are forced to attend school and work for their livelihoods at the same time.”

Get Bucks, a microfinancing entity, handed over goods which included washing basins, blankets, lotions, cooking oil and other basic commodities to 30 orphans in Seke.
