THE Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has raised a red flag over the Norton Town Council landfill, saying it no longer meets basic environmental standards.

The landfill, which is one of only two in Mashonaland West Province, has been touted as one of the best designed structures able to eliminate some of the waste management challenges, but standards have been deteriorating in recent months.

EMA Mashonaland West provincial spokesperson Mr Munyaradzi Nhariswa yesterday raised concern at the poor state of the landfill.

“We are concerned by failure by Norton Town Council to comply with clearly defined social, safety and environmental standards in landfill management,” said Mr Nhariswa.

“The landfill designs as contained in the approved Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) had a lifespan of over 20 years, which, however, is now under threat.

We urge the local authority to expedite procurement of a landfill compactor for regular compaction and covering of the waste as required.”
