FORMER Dynamos football club’s coach, Elvis “Chuchu” Chiweshe yesterday made a surprise appearance at Mbare magistrates’ court where he had brought his untrustworthy friend for using his car without his permission. Chiweshe had left his car, a Mazda Demio with his friend Benito Tikiwa (46) of Malborough Harare on August 1 after it developed a mechanical problem.

After getting the car from Chiweshe at his house in Glen View 7, Tikiwa took it to Glen Norah B on the pretext that he would fix the problem at the house.  However, the unlicensed Tikiwa removed the Botswana registration plates on the car as he drove it to Hatfield thereby defying the agreement with Chiweshe.

The court heard that Tikiwa switched off his cellphone and relocated to an unknown address.
Chiweshe tried in vain to locate Tikiwa at his known address. He called Tikiwa but he was not reachable.

This prompted Chiweshe to report the matter to the police leading to Tikiwa’s arrest and appearance in court. The mileage meter on Chiweshe’s car indicated that Tikiwa had driven the car for 2 000 kilometres.

Tikiwa who claimed to have known Chiweshe for the past 20 years was fined US$100 by Mbare magistrate Mr Rueben Mukavhi.
He pleaded guilty to two counts of driving without a licence and using the vehicle without the owner’s consent.

Mr Mukavhi fined him US$50 for each count and failure to pay the fine by today, Tikiwa risks spending 20 days behind bars.
Prosecutor Mr Fanuel Madanire prosecuted.
