ABOUT 400 surgeons and health practitioners from East, Central and Southern Africa are meeting in Harare to deliberate on emerging key issues in medical science. Doctors from Europe and America are also expected to take part in the conference scheduled for next week.President of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa in collaboration with the Association of Surgeons of East Africa (COSECSA-ASEA) Mr Christopher Samkange said the annual event was being held in conjunction with the Surgical Society of Zimbabwe.

“This will be the climax of a week of activities starting with pre-conference workshops on surgical procedures and trainings,” he said.

“These events will overlap with COSECSA council meetings, COSECSA examinations and award giving ceremony of membership/fellowship of the college.”

Renowned surgeons Professor Godfrey Muguti, Professor David Rosin, Sherry Wren and Thandinkosi Madiba are expected to address the gathering.

So far, United Bulawayo Hospital, Mpilo, Parirenyatwa and Harare Hospital were accredited to train surgeons.

This year will see the accreditation of additional institutions, Chitungwiza Central and Mutare Provincial hospital.

COSECSA-ASEA is the regional college responsible for training and certifying surgical specialities, including general surgery, orthopaedics, neurosurgery, urology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, otolaryngology and paediatric surgery.

Zimbabwe has the presidency of the COSECSA-ASEA.

The Surgical Society of Zimbabwe is a body of surgeons that was founded to co-ordinate the work they do and their primary objective is to advance education, training, standards, research and practice in surgical care in Zimbabwe.

The Surgical Society of Zimbabwe shapes and leads the training of surgeons in Zimbabwe.
