The Chimurenga-Rastakwasa combination of Jairos Chabvonga and Dino Mudondo has embarked on a national tour that would see the duo performing in many parts of the country in the next few weeks.

After Chabvonga’s recent album launch, the musicians have been working together at live shows and the results are commendable so far. Mudondo and Chabvonga have a lot in common since they were in the same class at school.

The current national tour is a continuation of their relationship and both say there are strong ties that bind them, which will see them working together on various projects. Dino features on Chabvonga’s album “Chimurenga Highway” on a duet titled “Vamwe Zvavo”, which mirrors the musicians’ real situations. The musicians mourn their late fathers and admit that there are gaps in their lives because of the loss.

Last week they performed at Dandaro Inn in the capital on Friday and travelled to Chikangwe Hall in Karoi on Saturday. Next week they are expected to perform in Hwange and Victoria falls in the second leg of the national tour. Next ports of call include Gweru, Masvingo and Mutare.

While the attendance at Dandaro Inn was average, the musicians – who were sharing the stage with Progress Chipfumo – staged a good show.

Chabvonga was in celebratory mood following his successful album launch. Dino showed fans that he still has the energy despite being absent from showbiz for a few months. Chipfumo was his usual best and exhibited immense skill on guitar, vocals and choreography.

In Karoi, Dino and Chabvonga had a good night in office as their show was well-attended. They did separate acts and combined for the duet much to the delight of fans in the Mashonaland West town.

Dino did tracks “Makorokoto”, “Makoikoi”, “Jatropha”, “Chirangano” and “Bhazi” among others.

Chabvonga pulled tracks from his previous album that include “KuZimbabwe”, “Dongo” and “Maidei” and he also played all tracks from the new album, “Chimurenga Highway”.

The new album adds to the pile of Chabvonga’s effort to keep Chimurenga music alive. The musician, who is inspired by Chimurenga guru Thomas Mapfumo, says he will do his best to keep the genre’s fans entertained.

“Chimurenga Highway” is likely to take Chabvonga to a higher level in his mission.

The opening song of the album “Kure Kwemeso” tells enemies that their plans will always be known to their intended victims because information travels faster than action. On “Hutadzi” he notes that ancestors and God are angry because of young people’s bad ways. He says things have gone bad and we need to change.

“Pamusoro Pegomo” is about a poor man’s wish to get to a better place in life. He wishes to be on top of a mountain where several provisions are available.

On the track “Rombe” Chabvonga represents a grieving parent who laments being neglected by children. The parent says he is suffering because the children are failing to look after him.
