Tawanda Mangoma in Chiredzi
Residents here are building a police post in the Lioness area north of Tshovhani suburb to cater for newly-established suburbs where incidents of robberies, theft, rape are rife.

The Herald is reliably informed that the post is almost complete and will start operating in the not-so-distant future.

The latest development comes after more than three people were fatally stabbed in the area during the last five years.

The residents said they were worried with the continued loss of valuable property to thieves and other criminals.

Speaking during a tour of the police post, Chiredzi West MP Cde Farai Msikavanhu said he had also helped the community with resource mobilisation.

“As you have heard, the community here in Ward 7 decided to build a police post, three years ago to help combat crime in this area,” he said.

“Our town has been growing rapidly over the last few years and we cannot continue relying on Chiredzi main police station was.

“This is not sustainable considering that one has to travel for a long distance to report a case.

“As the legislator, I had to step in with resource mobilisation following requests from members of the community.”

Cde Msikavanhu said the project was a result of team work from residents, businesses and various players including his predecessor, Darlington Chiwa, who provided roofing material under the Community Development Fund programme.

“We are now completing the project with the assistance of various companies and individuals. Without doubt this police base would open in no time because everyone is determined to see it open,” he said.

Former Ward 7 councillor, Mr Simbarashe Mashonganyika said the project was a brain child of the community.

“This project was the first chapter of devolution in Ward 7 as we identified a problem and tried to provide solutions.

“We also know that our ward is far away from council’s offices hence at this police base we will have a council point at which we will be settling our bills nearby,”he said.
