MASHONALAND West province today received 11 192 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine which are supposed to be dispatched to all the districts by Sunday.

The vaccines were stored at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital cold room which has a capacity of keeping 30 000 litres of vaccines.

Chegutu and Sanyati districts will receive the vaccines today while dispatch for Zvimba and Mhondoro districts, and Hurungwe and Kariba is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Makonde district in which Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital falls also received the doses today. Vaccination of over 6 000 front line workers including members of the media is expected to begin on Monday.

Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland West Mary Mliswa-Chikoka received the jabs. She said vaccination was voluntary and that Government was committed to vaccinate citizens in different phases.

Acting provincial medical director Dr Gift Masoja said once the province starts the vaccination programme, it has a window of 10 days to finish the exercise.

He said at least 316 health personnel from the province who tested positive for the virus including him would receive the jab in the second phase.

“Some of the 316 health workers who tested positive for Covid-19, are being excluded from the tally, meaning the delivery of vaccines will be adequate for jabbing almost the 6 058 frontline workers,” he said.
