The Zimbabwe Medical Awards Trust will next month honour medical workers who excelled in giving care to the sick, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The public health sector managed to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic, with a thorough and effective response to the global pandemic, which saw a major upgrade in services and the sector winning praise from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other countries.

Zimbabwe Medical Awards Trust chairperson Dr Josphat Chiripanyanga said it would be the first of such awards to recognise everyone in the field who played a critical part in health delivery.

“We will honour legends and the Covid-19 heroes,” he said. “When we say legends, we mean people who are the first to achieve something in our field. We are also planning to recognise institutions that have done well.

“These awards are not only for doctors and nurses, but everyone involved in the medical field. The idea is to motivate professionals to do their utmost in the provision of health services to help the country achieve its targets in the health sector.

“The idea is also to offer quality health coverage and to ensure everybody who visits a healthcare centre gets the best service.”

WHO has praised the path taken by the Government, particularly its quest for universal health coverage, which is anchored on leaving no one behind in the access to healthcare.
