and ordered to pay US$100 fines each.
Munyaradzi Vutete (24) of 742 14th Street in Hatcliffe and Nyasha Katuda (21) of Macheke Resettlement Village 1, were ordered by Harare magistrate Ms Paidamoyo Mukumbiri to pay the fines by March 25 or face three-month jail terms.
Vutete is a brother to Katuda’s mother and has been based in South Africa for the past three years.
In passing sentence, Ms Mukumbiri considered that they were first offenders and Katuda was pregnant.
“They pleaded guilty thereby smoothening the course of justice. Moral blameworthiness is very high and they had sex when they were related and even relatives tried to discourage them.
“Cases of this nature are prevalent and there is a need to preserve our culture,” Ms Mukumbiri said.
Prosecutor Mr Crispen Mavengani proved that in 2008, the pair fell in love while staying in South Africa where they co-habited as husband and wife, leading to Katuda getting pregnant.
They returned to Zimbabwe on January 11 and were confronted by Katuda’s parents.
Vutete and Katuda insisted they would not break up, were deeply in love and had marriage plans.
Katuda’s father made a police report resulting in their arrest. – CR.
