A Housing Pay Scheme has been left counting its losses after water and sewer pipes worth US$700 000 were stolen on council premises.

Materials belonging to St Martin’s Housing Pay Scheme were being kept at the council’s Department of Housing at Remembrance offices in Mbare which is secured by municipal police right around the clock.

Stolen sewer and water pipes covering 7, 5 kilometres include 2 500 items of 160mm economy PVC pipes, 1 500 classic MPVC pipes and galvanised pipes.

The theft was unmasked last week Tuesday when the pay scheme leadership wanted to hand over the material to a contractor to install the pipes.

Acting city spokesperson Mr Innocent Ruwende confirmed the theft of water and sewer pipes.

“Our enforcement is ceased with the matter and investigations are underway.

“Council is tightening security at all institutions and will also ensure that there are CCTV cameras to ensure that everything that happens at every council facility is monitored,” he said.

Interestingly, two by 5 000 litre water tanks belonging to the council were also recently stolen at the premises and reportedly no disciplinary hearing has been done.
