Church leaders have rapped privately owned media for using some clergy to advance the regime change agenda in Zimbabwe. Some church leaders were recently quoted in some sections of the media calling on President Mugabe to step down. Addressing a press conference in Harare on Thursday, representatives of 10 churches that included Jubilee City International, Water of Life Ministries, Winners International, Kingdom Church, Triumph Ministries, Hands of Christ Ministries, Africa Ablaze Ministries, International Faith Dialogue Forum and Zimbabwe Religious Authority Board, said the church must stay away from politics.

“Zimbabweans are called to guard against private media practitioners who are using churches to advance their ulterior motives and disseminations against Government.

“Zimbabwe has its own share of problems like any other country therefore churches are called upon to leave politics to politicians and refrain from being mouth pieces of national detractors on foiled attempts to destabilise Government,” said Tehillar Christian Network founder, Reverend Sam Malunga, speaking on behalf of the churches.

He said the role of the church was to give Godly counsel and spiritual guidance to the nation and its leaders. Rev Malunga said it was unacceptable for churches to form unholy alliances with the country’s detractors.

“The church has the moral obligation to pray for the nation and to inculcate moral sanity to citizens as well as to complement Government in curbing moral decadence.

“Religious leaders should serve as beacons of hope and speak positively about the nation in line with biblical statutes and oracles. They should not be agents of hopelessness and failure but be the light and the salt of the world,” added Rev Malunga.
