Church service for national hero Nyathi General (Retired) Sikhulile Simpson Nyathi

A family church service will be held today for Major General (Retired) Sikhulile Simpson Nyathi in Harare from 10am to 3pm at the family’s Mabelreign home.

Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage director of finance Mr Exavier Chisoko said last night that the event was purely a family programme.

Maj-Gen Nyathi will be buried at the National Heroes Acre on Monday. On Thursday this week, the national hero was given a rousing send-off at his rural homestead in Gwanda, where speakers praised him for his love for the country and community.

The body returned to Harare from Gwanda on the same day and will lie in state at Charles Gumbo Barracks until burial on Monday.

Maj-Gen Nyathi died on Sunday morning at Josiah Magama Tongogara Barracks Referral Hospital in Harare at the age of 61 and was declared a national hero.

Maj-Gen Nyathi held key appointments in the army with regular promotion until reaching the highest levels.

He was a Major in 1984, Lieutenant Colonel in 1990, Colonel in 1997, Brigadier General in 2010 and Major General in 2020.

He also attended Zimbabwe National Army courses and was decorated for his continued dedication, and selfless and exemplary service to the nation.

Maj-Gen Nyathi is survived by his wife and three children.
