Chipindura Primary School was the winner of the expanded Mashonaland Central heritage education quiz held in Bindura recently and will represent the province at the national quiz finals in Harare on May 17.

National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe (NMMZ) curator Mr Kelvin Machiwenyika said the programme was extended to all provinces to allow learners to get acquainted with knowledge of localised heritage and culture content.

Mr Machiwenyika, who was representing the regional director Mr Godhi Bvocho, said the quiz competition fed into the revised curriculum and the nation’s commitment to the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda.

“The competition speaks volumes of how we take the revised curriculum seriously and how much we read into the national agenda of enabling key development goals through localised participation in and upholding of community culture heritage,” he said.

“We have made our mark towards the nation’s commitment to Vision 2030 which mentions culture explicitly in relation to education, economic growth, sustainable cities and consumption and production patterns.

“There is no sustainable development without a sustainable heritage and cultural knowledge. Harnessing cultural and heritage resources assists in reducing inequalities among countries and communities.

“Only two districts out of the eight in Mash Central participated in the quiz competition and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education undertook to expand the programme to all districts next year.

“Bindura and Mazowe district are the two districts that participated and we received reliable commitment from the province to have all districts taking part next year.

“It is refreshing to witness the expansion of the programme as we celebrate reaching 25 years into the programme.”
