China has over the years transformed itself into a technological giant owing to its refocus in Information and Communication Technologies, Speaker of National Assembly Cde Jacob Mudenda has said.He said China was now being envied by many developed and developing countries due to its  technological innovations.

Cde Mudenda said this yesterday in the capital at a ceremony where he received ICT equipment worth US$100 000 donated to the Parliament of Zimbabwe by the Chinese People’s Association for Peace and Disarmament.

The equipment was handed over by China’s ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Lin Lin at a brief ceremony held at Parliament Building yesterday.

“Some few years ago, the Chinese people were behind in so far as technology was concerned,” said Cde Mudenda. “Today, they are a big giant among giants in technological innovation, which is the envy of many countries, including Zimbabwe. I think they have done so because of their change in mindset to their situation. They have begun to refocus themselves within the global village and in doing so they have been able to excel in technology.”

Cde Mudenda said the equipment would go a long way in ensuring that Parliament discharged its obligation as set out in the Government’s economic blue-print, the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio and Economic Transformation. Some of the benefits to be derived, he said, were improvement in connectivity, accurate recording of parliamentary proceedings, portfolio committee and administrative meetings.

Speaking at the same occasion, Mr Lin said China redoubled its efforts in dealing with Zimbabwe as it sought to deepen bilateral relations dating back to the liberation struggle.

He said trade volumes between the two countries stood at US$1,1 billion last year alone.

Speaking at the same occasion, Senate President Cde Edna Madzongwe said the donation would go a long way in meeting Parliament’s set goals.
