SUNDAY Chidzambwa is worried that his team is not scoring goals and has started searching for a seasoned striker to help ZPC Kariba fight for their lives in the Castle Lager Premiership this season.

Chidzambwa told The Herald yesterday that their poor finishing was the reason they have not won in the three games he has been in charge.

ZPC Kariba were held to a goalless draw by newboys Tsholotsho on Friday, the third game they have fired blanks since Chidzambwa’s arrival.

“We didn’t play well in the last game, not as much as we did in the other two in which we controlled the game and created a lot of scoring chances,” said Chidzambwa.

“We really struggled in Bulawayo and the pitch, which was bumpy, didn’t make it any easy for the boys.

“But there is great potential. We need to really work hard in our finishing. I think we need to get a seasoned goal getter to beef up the strike-force. We are looking around.” Midfielder Raphael Manuvire is currently the side’s top scorer with six goals to his credit while veteran forward Artwell Nyamiwa has contributed four.

ZPC Kariba are currently sitting in the bottom half of the table with 16 points from as many games.

They are 14 points behind log leaders Chicken Inn.

Chidzambwa yesterday said they need to work harder in the remaining matches as they prepare to host second-placed Triangle in their next assignment.

“Normally, football in the second half of the season is usually tougher. So we need to fight hard to survive.

“We need to keep creating those chances and to be able to put them away too,” said Chidzambwa.

However, ZPC Kariba are not the only team struggling with their finishing.

Only seven goals were scored in eight matches at the weekend, six of which ended in stalemates.

CAPS United have managed only 12 goals from 16 starts.

They were involved in a goalless draw with log leaders Chicken Inn at the weekend and coach Mark Mathe has his defence to thank for keeping them in the top eight.

CAPS United have not conceded a goal in their last six outings.

“The defenders have been very good but they can only defend to a certain extent. Football is not won only by defending and so we need to improve on our ball possession and our conversion as well.

“The main issue is we are not scoring enough. So we are looking for a player who can help us solve our problems in that department.

“Otherwise we are not content being sixth on the log standings. We also want to compete with the other teams at the top of the table,” said Mathe. Makepekepe lost four players during the mid-season window and managed to bring on board only two in the form of Zambian left-back Michael Mwenu and midfielder Phineas Bamusi.

The Harare giants parted ways with Rodreck Mutuma, who is now back at Dynamos, Gerald Phiri (Bidvest Wits), Ishmael Thindwa (Mighty Wanderers) and Ronald Pfumbidzai to Danish side Hobri IK.
