Zanu-PF’S candidate for Masvingo North Cde Davis Marapira has launched a poultry project to economically empower women in the constituency. Cde Marapira donated 23 000 chicks for them to venture into poultry production. The project is expected to boost household incomes in the rural constituency while also complementing Government’s Command Poultry programme.

Over 5 000 women in Masvingo North are expected to benefit from the programme. Cde Marapira yesterday said he was keen to expand the programme to benefit more women and youths in his constituency.

“We have so far donated 23 000 chicks across all wards in Masvingo North wards and we want to increase the number of beneficiaries further from the 5 000 who have already benefited,” he said.

“The project is mainly targeting women, but we also want youths to benefit in the long run,” said Cde Marapira.
He said local poultry products producer, Irvine’s, has already started training women to ensure the poultry project is successful.

“‘This is going to be an ongoing project and we have partnered with Irvine’s and will train the beneficiaries for the project to be a success.”

Cde Marapira said plans were underway to set up a chicken abattoir in the country’s oldest town for easy marketing of the chicken products.

“Our main focus now is to establish an chicken abattoir, we are working with the Cold Storage Company and private players to open the abattoir at CSC that will benefit beneficiaries of the women’s poultry project,” said Cde Marapira.
He, however, urged youths to be innovative and upgrade their education to be marketable as Government was in the process of creating employment by resuscitating closed companies.
