Bursar fleeces school

Court Reporter
A bursar at Muguta Secondary School in Epworth who allegedly received school fees through his EcoCash account yesterday appeared in court for embezzling about $16 000 since 2015.

The bursar, Darlington Nyagwaya (28), appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Josephine Sande. He is facing charges of fraud and was remanded to August 25.

Prosecutor Ms Linda Gadzikwa alleged that between May 2015 and June this year, Nyagwaya was tasked to receive school fees from pupils. It is alleged that he received the school fees in cash and was mandated to bank the money into the school’s ZB Bank account on the same day.

Nyagwaya allegedly failed to bank the money.

The offence came to light when the headmaster discovered that payment made to the account via Nyagwaya’s EcoCash account was not remitted to the school. The court heard that the school development committee was advised on the activities of Nyagwaya, leading to an audit.

It is alleged that after the reconciliation of the financial records, it was discovered that there was a shortfall of $16 074, 95. Nyagwaya failed to account for the money.
