“There are two great days in a person’s life – the day we are born and the day we discover why. A birthday is just another day where you go to work and people give you love,” once said Abhishek Bachchan.

But sometimes a birthday can be remarkable as in what happened last Wednesday to Child President Samuel Nyarenda. On the day he turned 16 Samuel was taken for a walk in the woods around Mazoe High School premises only to come back and find his family, teachers, other school mates in a merry mood bursting into a birthday song when they caught sight of him.

Samuel said he felt very special, honoured and overwhelmed with the surprise party organised by his parents at his school.

“I was not expecting this from my parents or anyone at school but this is just something out of my mind. I am honoured today not because I am the junior president or anything. I am forever thankful to my parents for such an event, I feel loved.

“I appreciate everyone who took time to come out and make this event a memorable one for me, even my friends who made it their point to distract me from coming to the venue, they made it all become a big surprise to me. Thank you guys,” he said.

The Child President also took time to encourage students who are sitting for their final examinations saying they should remain focused until the final day.

Samuel’s Father, Rephat David Nyarenda also encouraged the birthday boy to inculcate what President Robert Mugabe told him on his inauguration day some months ago:

“When you go back to school, read your books. Education is more important than anything else.”
