Jailed police assistant commissioner Gidion Baloyi was on Friday granted bail by the High Court pending his appeal against conviction and a nine-month jail term imposed for bringing the force into disrepute.
Baloyi, who was convicted of corruptly instructing a junior officer to release a fraud suspect, appealed at the High Court against the decision to deny him bail pending appeal.
Justice Garainesu Mawadze granted US$500 bail coupled with stringent conditions.

“There are prospects of success on appeal. In my view the appellant (Baloyi) is not likely to abscond but to await the hearing of the appeal and have all issues ventilated,” said Justice Mawadze.
