The Zimbabwe Combined Residents and Ratepayers Association (Ziccora) has called on citizens to embrace President Mnangagwa’s clean-up initiative, adding that people should go an extra mile by cleaning their environments daily and not only on the first Friday of each month as designated.

Addressing residents in Rugare, Harare, yesterday, Ziccora president McStephen Nyabvure said President Mnangagwa was a busy person who sacrificed his time every month to clean the environment, making it essential for residents to be dedicated to keeping hygiene.

“Let’s support our President’s initiative by conducting clean-up programmes within our localities to ensure a clean environment within our areas,” he said.

“We should not wait for the special day which our President participates in, but let it become a habit which every resident practices all the time; let it be an everyday practice.

“President Mnangagwa is a busy man as we all know. He introduced to us this vital programme and he takes a lead in the streets holding a broom trying to ensure that we live in a clean environment, so we have a duty to support him always.”
Mr Nyabvure said communities and organisations such as churches, businesses and schools should voluntarily take it upon themselves to clean public areas and other places where litter is illegally dumped.

“Everyone should play a part in order to keep our environment in a safe, clean and healthy state,” he said.
“The process of cleaning up is not the sole responsibility of the organising committee, but all responsible stakeholders including you as members of the public; you are expected to practice it nearly everyday.”

President Mnangagwa has declared the first Friday of each month as the National Environment Cleaning Day, as Government moves to ensure the country has sustainable environment management and waste disposal systems.

The national environmental cleaning across the country is carried out between 8am and 10am every first Friday of the month.
