The Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday sent a condolence message to the Chiketa family following the death of Ambassador Stephen Cletus Chiketa at the Avenues Clinic on Wednesday. In a statement, the Foreign Affairs Ministry expressed sadness over the untimely death of Cde Chiketa.“The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Honourable. Simbarashe Mumbengegwi; the Deputy Minister Honourable. Edgar Mbwembwe; the Secretary, Ambassador J. M. Bimha; and the entire staff in the ministry, express deep and heartfelt condolences to Ambassador Chiketa’s wife and children, as well as to the entire Chiketa family on this very sad and untimely loss,” reads the statement.

Ambassador Chiketa joined the Foreign Affairs Ministry in 1982 as an Under Secretary. He had an illustrious career as one of the pioneer ambassadors of Zimbabwe. He served as Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations in New York.

He was then appointed Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Romania, where he served with distinction, from 1987-1989.

Ambassador Chiketa was described as a hardworking leader.

“A hardworking leader, known for his dedication to duty, diligence as well as loyalty to the Government of Zimbabwe, Ambassador Chiketa was subsequently appointed Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, from 1990 — 1993; Kuwait, from 1994- 2002; Iran, from 2003-2007; Australia, from 2007-2009; and Sweden, from 2010-2014.

“During his illustrious career as Principal Representative of the Head of State, spanning over 27 years, the longest ever in the history of our country, Ambassador Chiketa vigorously defended the interests of the nation and was instrumental in the promotion of relations between Zimbabwe and the seven countries where he was assigned,” reads the statement.

Ambassador Chiketa retired from Service in 2014.

“His passing away is not only a loss to his family, friends and relatives, but to the ministry, where his devotion to duty and leadership left an indelible mark. The Ministry’s entire staff will sorely miss this erudite and esteemed colleague and friend.

“As the family mourns its dearly departed, we pray that the Almighty gives them much-needed strength and courage during this very sad period. May His Soul Rest in Eternal Peace,” the statement reads.
