TWO completed sections of the US$80 million Harare Airport Road express-way were opened to road users yesterday.
The project site agent Mr Neil Wilbore said work was complete on the two sections.
“We have opened the stretch from just after the Post Office up to the intersection after One Commando as a dual carriage way and the other section from Harare Drive up to the Airport,” he said. “I am sure the only way to show people that we have been doing something here is to open the road to the public.”

He said it may be difficult for people to get used to the directions but they would with time, adding that work continues on the remaining parts of the road. Augur Investments chairman Mr Ken Sharpe last week said given that the current momentum is maintained the second phase of the road works would be complete by April next year.

He said thereafter the works would be concentrated on the Mukuvisi Section with the main investment being in the bridge structures. Mr Sharpe said his company has acquired a new plant and equipment which includes a new asphalt mixing plant imported from India for the project, adding that the equipment would remain in the country.

The project, which started in 2008, would entail the design and construction of a direct link from Enterprise Road at its junction with Robert Mugabe/Mutare Road in Eastlea on the eastern fringes of the CBD, over the National Railways of Zimbabwe marshalling yard and crossing the Mukuvisi River to join the existing Airport Road at Alamein Road.
