In an era where information-driven innovation is trending globally, access to affordable and efficient information communication technology infrastructure affords citizens a chance to become part of the digital economy, thus bettering their livelihoods through reduction of poverty and improved healthcare.

Speaking at the launch of the Nyadire Containerised Village Information Centre in Mashonaland East Province last Friday, Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister, Dr Jenfan Muswere, Government remains committed to providing ICT infrastructure to all citizens regardless of geographical, social or economic status.

This would enhance a digital economy that reflects a digitally knowledgeable society that keeps abreast with technological advancements through embracing an innovation culture in line with the provisions of the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).

“Advanced technological and digital skills are a prerequisite for the development of an innovation culture, which is the cornerstone for success in the digital economy.

“It is, therefore, incumbent upon us, as Government, to cultivate an innovation culture among our citizenry,” said Dr Muswere.

In the quest to build requisite skills and competences for harnessing the digital economy for socio-economic growth, the ministry established the ICT Innovation Drive, aimed at promoting a culture of innovation among the youths.

“In line with the country’s thrust of Education 5.0, and the aspirations of the National Development Strategy (NDS1), the Innovation Drive is assisting innovation hubs at universities in the acquisition of the tools and equipment required to support the attainment of this national vision,” he said.

Young innovators, including those outside the formal education system, are being natured through the Innovation Drive by way of provision of seed capital in the form of grants for projects still at ideation stage.

Dr Muswere said his ministry would continue playing a vital role in the transformation agenda enshrined in NDS1 to ensure equitable access to digital technologies for all citizens by promoting inclusivity, sustainable industrialisation and fostering innovation.

Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) director general, Dr Gift Machengete, said the importance of ICTs in empowering citizens and bettering the quality of their lives could not be overemphasised.

“It goes without saying that ICTs are crucial in empowering people as well as improving business efficiency and profitability.

“Access to ICTs and effective participation in the digital economy is also critical in improving the quality of life for all,” he said.

Dr Machengete said to mitigate the effects of Covid-19, Potraz, under its ICTs for Disaster Programme, will be providing free internet access to all CICs countrywide until December 31.
