A wide-brim fedora hat!

Craig Twist Fashion Correspondent

Like it or not, the fedora hat is here to stay.

Back in the day when more formal dress codes and hats were in fashion, you’d be hard-pressed to find any man of style leaving home without one.

Since then, the versatile head-piece has cemented itself as one of the most popular hat styles for both men and women.

It’s more formal than caps, so it’s easy to dress up, but adaptable enough to dress down.

What is a fedora hat?

A fedora is a type of hat characterised by a pliable brim-usually two to three inches wide and an indented crown with a centre crease pinched on both sides.

There is no doubt that the fedora is a time piece of head wear.

Not only are they a throwback to a bygone era when dapper gentlemen, wore them on a daily, but fedoras have also become a go-to staple for stylish men.

Bruno Mars and Jonny Depp prove just how versatile the fedora can be whether dressed up or dressed down.

As with anything that’s been around for a long time, fedora hats have experienced some slight changes over the years giving birth to a different types of fedoras.

What to consider when choosing a fedora

THE SIZE: Choose a fedora that seats comfortably on your head, neither too tight nor too big. You can use your finger for surety by placing it in between your head and the hat — if there’s enough space for your finger, then you have the right size.

THE MATERIAL: Fedoras come in a variety of materials. Consider where you’ll be wearing them and add a few to your collection for different seasons.

THE COLOURS: Simple is nice especially if you are new to the fedora frenzy. Neutral colours are always the way to go; grey, beige, navy etc.

Can I wear a  fedora hat with formal clothes?

First and foremost, a fedora is a dressy hat. It is smart and fashionable, something that screams style and “I have good taste.” It looks best when paired with a suit and tie.

Fancy dinner parties and weddings are great occasions, but avoid anything too serious like a funeral, a fedora is totally out of space.

Fedoras can also sit well with a pair of smart pants and a polo neck, this look can be spiced with a blazer for a more formal look.

Can fedoras fit in my casual look?

Generally NO! Don’t ever wear this timeless piece with a T-shirt. You’ll definitely look like you live in your mothers’ backyard and eat leftovers for lunch. Don’t do that!

However, like all the rules, this too can be broken but only in good judgement. Fedora can be downright trend-setting if worn with the right pair of jeans and shoes.

As long as the outfit is forward and the clothes fit well then go ahead and add a blazer or coat, or anything with a collar is a move.

A straw fedora hat can go seamlessly with a pair of jeans and a nice collared shirt if you are on vacation, lounging at the beach or pool or heading to a beach club.

However, not everyone is going to appreciate this style. Wear one if you want to keep the sun off your face and maintain an upscale look at the same.

Generally, unless you are an artiste wearing a fedora (even a straw one) with jeans and a T-shirt is not an everyday event.

As they project style and sophistication, fedora hats make the perfect wardrobe choice…Go ahead and get yourself this classic piece.
