More donations for Idai victims Minister Chadzamira

Donations continue to pour in for Cyclone Idai victims here with Christian Care and prominent businessman, Mr Philemon Mutangiri each donating seven tonnes of food and non-food items to help mitigate the effects of the disaster.

The donations, which included mealie-meal, was handed over to the Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs Cde Ezra Chadzamira, yesterday for onward transmission to the victims in Bikita.

The tropical cyclone claimed more than 150 lives in Chimanimani and Chipinge and five in Masvingo’s Bikita district.

Over 3000 homes were affected in Masvingo, Bikita, Gutu and Zaka districts while 291 were left homeless during the disaster that affected a cumulative over 5 000 people in Masvingo province.

Speaking after receiving the donations at Benjamin Burombo Government complex, Cde Chadzamira hailed the philanthropic gesture towards easing the plight of cyclone victims. He challenged the corporate world to continue addressing humanitarian crisis countrywide.

“We are humbled by the humanitarian gesture you have showed. It is refreshing to note that our business community would join with the Government in assisting those in need.

“Your assistance will go a long way in alleviating the plight of the affected families in Masvingo,” said Minister Chadzamira.

Lowveld sugar producer, Tongaat Huletts Zimbabwe and the Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) church also donated food and non-food items in solidarity with the cyclone victims.

They joined Masvingo’s biggest retail giant, N Richards Wholesales and Supermarket who donated seven tonnes of food and non-food items towards Idai victims. The food items included cooking oil and mealie-meal.

Last week, Zanu PF National Political Commissar Retired Lieutenant General, Dr Engelbert Rugeje, set the ball rolling after handing over blankets and mealie-meal to victims of Cyclone Idai in Bikita.

The mealie-meal had been sourced by Dr Rugeje from Bikita sons and daughters who are scattered within and without the country’s borders
